Circuit: 4.933 kms. Weather: Dry, mostly sunny 19-23 C

Cautious Troy loses pole by a fraction

A slow speed tumble towards the end of this afternoon’s untimed qualifying was
just about enough to put Troy off his usual fast pace in Superpole. Troy had
completed more or less a complete race distance, and then tipped off going in
turn one - fortunately without injury. Because of that, Troy approached the turn
cautiously at the start of his Superpole lap and so his first split time was a
little down on the leaders. He recovered superbly on the second and third
splits, but it wasn’t quite enough to take Superpole.

Chris Vermeulen (Honda) pulled out all the stops on his Superpole lap, smashing
the lap record on the way to the fastest time in the 16-rider shoot-out. Second
quickest is Regis Laconi (Ducati), with Troy third and James Toseland (Ducati)
fourth.

TROY - 3rd, 1:48.649

Practice had gone very well and I put in consistent laps in our simulated race
distance. Then, just a couple of minutes from the end of the untimed session, I
had a little fall in turn one. I approached that turn a bit too cautiously on my
Superpole lap and that’s where I lost time. My second and third splits were
just as quick as Chris (Vermeulen), so if I had gone faster at the beginning, I
probably would’ve been on pole.

But, as long as I am on the front row I’m happy. The top eight are pretty close,
so I think it’s going to be two tight races tomorrow. I can’t see anybody making
a break, but we’ll just have to see how it all pans out , but obviously I’ll be
going for a couple of podiums.
